The mental health needs of student-athletes have garnered increasing attention, yet the counseling profession lacks established competencies and training standards for this unique population. This study addressed this gap by utilizing a real-time Delphi method to identify essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes for counselors working with athletes. A diverse panel of seven expert mental health professionals, including licensed counselors, psychologists, and a social worker, participated. Through an iterative process of open-ended questionnaires, Likertscale ratings, and comment exchanges, the panel reached a consensus on potential competencies. Data analysis involved the interpolation of median scores, IQR calculations, and descriptive statistics to assess consensus. The Delphi process yielded 90 indicators, with 51 achieving unanimous consensus (IQR=0) and 33 achieving moderate consensus (IQR=1). The results highlight the importance of understanding athletic culture, athletic identity, and the unique mental health challenges faced by student-athletes. Key competencies identified included knowledge of mental health challenges specific to athletes, grief related to injuries and career transitions, and the ability to work with athletes during various life transitions. Essential skills such as flexibility, empathy, and the ability to collaborate within athletes' support systems were identified. Findings suggest training should address cultural competency and incorporate a strength-based approach to working with athletes. These results have significant implications for counselor education programs, specialized training initiatives, and clinical practice. The study's limitations, including the small panel size, are acknowledged. Recommendations for future research emphasize the need for population-specific studies across different athletic contexts, intervention evaluations, and collaborative approaches. This research establishes the groundwork for competency frameworks that can guide counselors in providing culturally responsive and effective mental health support to athletes, promoting their well-being, and facilitating positive outcomes.
