TheIdaho Transportation Department (ITD)is proposing to place high-early strength (HES) concrete with polypropylene fibers in 25-cm (10-in.) closure pours between girders. Apreviousresearch project was carried outto determine the effectiveness of the HESmaterial and the connection detailbytesting small and larger specimens with headed bars. Among the six closure pour concrete mixes considered, one was selected that had the largest compressive and tensile strength values and the lowest shrinkage value. An ITD-specified mix has been implemented in construction of a new bridge near Preston, Idaho. Inthisproject, the bridge was instrumented with 94 sensors to monitor theperformance of the HES concreteunder known truck loading and commercial trucks. A finite element model was also refinedto replicate strain data observed duringload testing.
