David Porter, PE, SE, of J&D Group is searching for an alternative method for anchoring wood shear walls to concrete stem walls. The alternative anchor design, known as the adjustable anchor system, will allow for a threaded rod to be adjusted horizontally within a concrete insert to the desired position as required to align with the chords within a shear wall. This design is intended to give concrete and wood framing contractors room for error when aligning embedded anchors with shear wall chords, which has proven to be a critical issue among wood construction projects. The work presented in this thesis is to understand the behavior of the proposed adjustable anchor system due to tensile loads through experimental testing and computer modeling.
