Abstracts
Previous studies have been conducted that demonstrate the facilitative learning effects of animation in single-symbol tasks and receptive syntax. However, there is no current research regarding the effects of animation on expressive syntax outcomes in graphic symbol sequences. This study investigated the effects of symbol format on the whole-sequence and symbol-by symbol accuracy of graphic symbol sequences (Subject-Verb-Object [SVO] and Subject-Verb-Object-Preposition-Compliment [SVOPC]) in 7- and 8-year-old typically developing children. Mixed-measure ANOVAs indicated no significant main effect for symbol format on construction accuracy. However, there was a significant interaction between symbol format and the first condition participants completed. Participants performed best when exposed to the static condition prior to the animated condition. Additionally, there was a significant effect for sequence types as participants constructed SVO sequences with higher accuracy than SVOPC. Limitations and future directions are discussed.
