SharedinterestsintheuseandvalueofsalmonhaveresultedindisparateaccessandparticipationinmultipleeconomiessurroundingcommonpoolresourceswithintheAlaskaPeninsularegion.Thisthesisexploresthecomplexintersectionsofthesocialecologicalsystembetweensalmon,localAleut(Unangan)subsistenceusers,andbothlocalandoutsidersportusers.Recently,politicalinfluenceresultedinaFederallandexchangeintendedasaroadcorridorbisectingtheIzembekNationalWildlifeRefuge.Thishaspotentialtodisruptthecurrentsystemofhuman-humanandhuman-fishrelationships,causingstructuralvulnerabilitywithinandamongusergroups,anddamagingtheoverallresiliencyofthesharedmilieu.Datasuggeststhatheuristicvisitorexposuretolocalcommunityperspectivesandincreasedinvolvementoflocalusersinsportfishingmayencourageasharedstewardshipbasedontraditional(Aleut)values.Usingapoliticalecologyframework,thisthesisexposestheonsetofacriticalmomentinsocialandeconomicdevelopment,highlightingevolvinghuman-fishandhuman-humanrelationships.Keywords:Salmon,Alaska,Aleut,Subsistence,SportFishing,CommercialFishing,PoliticalEcology,ParticipantObservation |
