This qualitative study was conducted to explore dental hygiene diagnosis (DHDx) and how dental hygienists experience the phenomenon while providing dental hygiene care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among hygienists practicing in California, Oregon, or Colorado. Open coding was utilized to analyze data and recognize themes. Data analysis revealed four themes. DHDx was validated as a necessary component in the dental hygiene process of care that facilitates patient-centered care. Second, foundational learning of DHDx begins in dental hygiene education; confidence and value in the use of DHDx was gained through clinical experiences. Dental hygienists create the dental hygiene care plan and include a holistic approach to care as they advocate for referrals. Finally, providing a DHDx helped to improve patient outcomes. A systematic approach to care is used which authenticates DHDx as a necessary and valuable component in the process of care. DHDx is an important factor for improving patient outcomes. |
