Wolves in Idaho are at the forefront of a political and symbolic conflict evidenced by the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 1211. As the future of Idaho’s wolves grows uncertain, it becomes vital to understand how Idahoans view wolves and whether they support this controversial law. Using an online survey administered through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, I analyzed the relationships between demographics, life experiences, and ecological values on wolf attitudes and SB 1211 provision support, and made comparisons between Montana and Wyoming responses. Overall, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming residents had favorable attitudes toward wolves and did not support most SB 1211 provisions. Moreover, the results indicated that demographics, life experiences, and ecological values were associated with support for SB 1211 provisions, but were less important in determining wolf attitudes. The results imply that decisionmakers should incorporate public opinion into their policies to enhance policy support, reduce human-wolf conflict, and promote conservation. |
