Every year, 246 million waste tires are generated in the United States. That is roughly three tires per four individuals in the country. Most of the tires end up in landfills, which adversely affects the environment. Over the last two decades, researchers have explored the use of tire chips in concrete to replace a portion of the coarse aggregates. The results of past studies indicate that up to 50% of coarse aggregates in concrete can be replaced with tire chips. The use of recycled rubber tires and rubber chips in concrete columns is purposed in this study. The tires are used as external transverse reinforcements around plain concrete columns. The tires function as a formwork while pouring the concrete and provide confinement after curing. This concept can be used for retrofitting structures with inadequate foundations and constructing new structures. External tire confinement increased the average axial force capacity of columns by around 50%, regardless of the concrete mix used. Adding rubber chips to the concrete mix was found to increase the ductility but decrease the compressive strength of a column. The confinement effectiveness ratio for all confined specimens was greater than one
