The foundation of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes the combination of graphic symbols to create messages, butresearch has focused solely on static graphic symbolmessagesin spite of mainstream commercial technologies such as animation. This study investigated the effects of symbol format (animation and static) on identificationaccuracyand readingaccuracy(labeling) of graphic symbol sequences (5-symbol)in 7-and 8-year-old children with typical development. Paired samples t-tests indicated significant differences between the symbol formats for both the four-choiceidentification taskand the reading task. Animated sentences were identified and read with greater accuracy when compared tostatic sentences; however, response latency differences were negligible. Overall, animations facilitated identification accuracy and symbol sequenceinterpretationin this sample. Limitations and future directions are discussed. Keywords: Augmentative and alternative communication animation; Animation, Graphic symbols; Identification; Receptive syntax
