Positive Psychology has identifieda positive relationship between gratitude and subjective well-being(SWB).Gratitude’s effecton well-being might be throughan expectancy of change(Wood, Froh, & Geraghty, 2010);to date, this speculationhas not been studied.Thisthesis useda three-group experimental design to examine the influence of an expectation of change after a gratitude intervention on SWB and Appreciation of Beauty (AB).It washypothesizedthat groupsexposed to anexpectancyof change for either SWBor ABduring a gratitude interventionwouldhave higher scoresthan a controlgroupthat was not exposedto an expectation of change. Theexpectationmanipulation was successful; however, all groups had similar levels of SWB and AB. Results show that an expectation of change does not seem to be driving increases in SWB following agratitude intervention. Key Words: Gratitude, Gratitude intervention, Subjective Well-being, Expectation of Change
